Domain Names

The domain name is how people reach your web site e.g. www.scotz.net or e-mail you e.g. info@scotz.net. It is every bit as important as your business name because it says something about you, your business and what it does.

We all know what Toys R Us do and it comes as no surprise to know that their web site is www.toysrus.co.uk. B and Q is a little bit more fiddly but no one can forget their web site - www.diy.co.uk. It does what it says on the box and it is easy to remember. Yours should be too.

At Scotz.Net, we are able to help you find the right domain name for you and your business. A generic name such as acmeplumbing@hotmail.co.uk, irrespective of how good the company is, doesn't convey a professional image whereas bob@acmeplumbing.co.uk is much better.

We know how important a good domain name is and we can obtain the right name if it is available. We have even been known to broker sought after domain names for customers.

TEX SPEX
Domain Names.
Domain Name Format.

A domain name is usually split into three sections. These are:
  • Top Level Domains.
Called TLDs, you will recognise these by the endings such as .com, .edu, .gov, .net, .org. They are categories and indicate the purpose of the web site.

    Country Codes.
Called ccTLDs, you will recognise these by their appearance, usually, at the end of the domain names e.g. direct.gov.uk, cameroncc.org.uk, wizardrock.co.uk.

  • Second Level Domains.
This is the name that we all recognise as being the business e.g. toysrus, national-lottery etc.

  • Third Level Domains.
This is the bit at the front. The www bit or the ftp bit. It is the bit that tells the Internet what type of action is required.
Put them all together and you have what is referred to as the domain name e.g. www.scotz.net. There are also fourth and fifth level domains but these are so esoteric that most people will not come across them.

A domain name is unique and cannot be duplicated in any way. For instance, www.abc.com is the same domain as www.ABC.com. You can, however, have similar names using symbols and numbers. www.diy.com is different from www.D1Y.com (spot the use of the number "1"). The use of the "-" or the definitive article "the" are useful ways of obtaining a unique name e.g. www.h-p.com or www.thecourier.co.uk.

Domains For Sale.

Well, strictly speaking, no domain can be purchased outright by anyone. All domains are effectively rented until you no longer need it. In the UK, all .uk domains are controlled by an organisation called Nominet and we obtain them on your behalf.

A domain can be purchased from the current registrant and transferred to you at a mutually agreed price. We are able to put you in contact with the current registrants of a number of good quality domain names. Just click on any that takes your fancy and e-mail the registrant your offer. As we mentioned earlier in TexSpex, a domain name is unique. And for those special ones, it is first come, first served. If you don't get it for your business, a competitor will, imagine how you would feel to see a competitor successfully using a top quality domain name.
